I got about fifteen minutes into the show when I heard a noise coming from upstairs. I turned the TV off to listen closer.
âNo!â Demi screamed, and I jumped up out of my seat. My heart hammered in my chest as I sped out of the living room and up the stairs. I had no idea what I was going to find, but I didnât care.
âNo!â she screamed again, and I burst through the door to find her thrashing about on her bed.
âDemi!â I hurried over to her, and knelt down on the mattress. âDemi, wake up,â I said softly as I gripped her shoulders, and gently shook, trying to wake her.
âMom!â she cried as tears rolled down her cheeks. âFrankie, no!â
She hadnât responded to me so I tried a different approach. âLydia!â
Demi gasped and woke with a start as my hands still gripped her delicate shoulders. âYouâre safe,â I said, repeating what Iâd heard from my room. âYouâre safe, Demi.â
âJordan?â Demiâs eyes were wide and terrified as she looked up at me with tears still running down her face. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI heard you screaming. You were having a nightmare,â I said, releasing her shoulders.
I wiped her tear stained cheeks with my fingertips.
Demiâs lip wobbled, and I knew she was badly shaken from whatever sheâd dreamt of. Fresh tears spilled over her eyelids, she screwed them shut, and she turned her head away from me.
âPlease go,â Demi whispered, curling up onto her side, her back turned to me.
I donât think so.
I wasnât walking away from her in that state, not even to sit downstairs. Instead, I kicked off my shoes and maneuvered myself behind her. I lay on my side, with my head on her pillow. It smelled just like her, and I took a lungful of the sweet scent. I wondered if I was going too far when I lifted my left arm and rested it across her, holding her.
âWhat are you doing?â Demi whispered. She was so still that if she hadnât been breathing she couldâve passed for a statue.
âI told you,â I whispered into her ear, and she shivered. âIâm not leaving you on your own.â
I could hear small sobs escaping from Demi, but I didnât push for answers. I just lay behind her with my arm over her and I knew I didnât want to be anywhere else.
My jeans became increasingly tighter as I lay next to her. I was hard as stone and I knew it was an inappropriate time, but I couldnât help it. Demiâs effect on me was getting stronger every single day.
âJordan?â Demi quietly whispered so I could barely hear her.
âYeah?â I replied.
âThank you.â
âWhat for?â
Demi looked over her shoulder and then turned to face me. I looked into her glistening eyes until she spoke again.
âFor caring.â Her voice broke and then she surprised me by curling herself into my chest.
Without hesitation I pulled her tighter towards me, and lifted my hand to stroke her hair. Demiâs shoulders shook and I held her as she wept.
